The Insurance Ombudsman is India's free, independent grievance redressal mechanism for policyholders. Here's exactly how to use it.
What is the Insurance Ombudsman?
The Insurance Ombudsman (IO) is established under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017. It is a quasi-judicial body that resolves disputes between policyholders and insurers. There are 17 regional Ombudsman offices across India. Key facts: - Free to use — no filing fees - Awards up to ₹30 lakhs (health insurance claims) - Binding on the insurer; you can accept or reject the award - Typical resolution: 3 months
Are you eligible?
You can file with the Insurance Ombudsman if: 1. You are the policyholder or nominee 2. The complaint relates to health insurance (claim rejection, delay, settlement shortfall) 3. The claim amount does not exceed ₹50 lakhs 4. You have first filed a complaint with the insurer and received an unsatisfactory response (or no response within 30 days) 5. The rejection occurred within the last 3 years
Documents you need
